Spectacular footage shows drug runners land their boat on beach at Mallorca holiday resort after speedboat chase with police…before helicopter follows them as they run through streets
Dramatic footage shows drug runners sprinting past bewildered tourists at a holiday resort just moments before police seized 1,200 kilograms of hashish.
The Mallorca Civil Guard shared the video of the inflatable boat approaching the island at high speed from the direction of North Africa on Friday.
At 4am, after the boat arrived at Cala Sa Nau in the south of the island, it was loaded with bales of hashish and 68 barrels of gasoline from two all-terrain vehicles.
The drug runners fled out to sea after they realised they had been spotted by police, leading to the dramatic high-speed boat chase – but officials knew the criminals did not have enough fuel for a long journey.
The desperate suspects then beached their boat at high speed and ran across the beach in a bid to escape as sunbathing tourists at the Mallorca resort looked on.
The police had spotted a boat being loaded with drugs and fuel and engaged in a high-speed chase
The suspects disembarked the boat, which they beached and abandoned, before they sprinted through a holiday resort
Officials had tracked down the boat during the course of the morning, and police officers were waiting on land to intercept the suspects.
When they arrived at the beached boat, which had been abandoned by the suspects, the drugs were still on board.
The drug runners were chased through a packed tourist resort and narrowly avoided tipping over sunbeds
All three were eventually detained by police. Officials found 1,200 of hashish which was then confiscated
A helicopter following the location of the suspected criminals then captured them on video as they sprinted through the resort, narrowly avoiding tourists and sunbeds.
The Civil Guard seized 31 bales of hashish pollen weighing 1,200 kilograms and three suspects were arrested.
In a statement the Civil Guard said: ‘Intercepted a narcolancha [speedboat used for drug running] that was heading at high speed to the coast of Mallorca from North Africa.’
The use of high-speed inflatable boats – also known as RIBs – for drug running has become a more serious problem for Spanish authorities in recent years.
Police recently boarded an abandoned narco submarine ‘ghost ship’ found off Spain’s coast last month.
Footage shows only the bow of the 50ft-long semi-submersible boat emerging from the waves
The 50ft semi-submersible vessel was spotted sinking in Vilagarcia de Arousa, off the coast of western Spain.
Footage showed only the bow of the craft emerging from the waves and as authorities inspected.
And this find came just days after the Colombian Navy seized a 49ft-long submarine with more than 2.6 tons of cocaine and two dead bodies on board in the Pacific Ocean.
