Residents in the Haitian capital have put gang members on notice and promised they will be lynched if they attempt to seek vengeance for the deaths of 13 alleged accomplices who were stoned and set on fire.
The warning came Monday, hours after a mob intercepted cops at an intersection in the Port-Au-Prince neighborhood of Canapé Vert and took the 13 men from police custody.
Shocking video footage showed 13 criminal gang members begging for forgiveness while lying in the middle of a street with gasoline-soaked tires placed over and around their bodies before they were torched.
‘It is out of the question that armed bandits come to settle in Canapé Vert, if others return, they will meet the same fate,’ an unnamed resident said, as quotes by local newspaper Le National. ‘We will not accept that these thugs transform our neighborhood like Canaan, Laboule, and Pernier.’
Another resident expressed concern that the gang would target locals and called on the cops to beef up their presence at the police station.
‘I wouldn’t advise anyone who doesn’t live in our neighborhood not to venture there because they risk losing their skin,’ the man told the newspaper.

Haiti cops patrol downtown Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, a day after 13 alleged gang members were beaten and burned alive by a mob
The gruesome incident took place after Canapé Vert cops stopped and searched a minibus for contraband early Monday and had confiscated weapons from the 13 suspects, the Haiti National Police said in a statement.
Canapé Vert residents who witnessed the killings said the suspects there were believed to have been members of the Kraze Barye gang, which translates to ‘Breaking Barriers.’
The group is led by Vitel´Homme Innocent, who is accused of helping kidnap 17 U.S. missionaries in October 2021 and also is linked to the assassination of Moïse.
The FBI offered a $1 million reward months ago for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction.

The mob appeared to burn the 13 men to death with gasoline-soaked tires on Monday after pulling them from police custody at a traffic stop, police and witnesses said
The horrific vigilante violence underlined public anger over the increasingly lawless situation in Port-au-Prince where criminal gangs have taken control over an estimated 60% of the city since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.
A United Nations report released Monday found at least 70 people, including 18 women and at least two children, were killed in clashes involving rival Port-Au-Prince gangs clashes between April 14 and 19.
However, the Canapé Vert neighborhood so far has been among the few that have managed to evade control by the criminal gangs.

Canapé Vert resident, Edner Samuel, told The Associated Press that members of the crowd took the suspected gangsters away from police, beat them and stoned them before putting tires on them, pouring gasoline over them and burning them.
He said the suspects were believed to have been heading to another area to join a group of gang members who were battling police. Another witness, Jean Josue, said there had been a lot of shooting in the area since the early morning.
The situation in the capital was tense, and shots could be heard ringing out from several neighborhoods.
In a separate incident, another six bodies were found burned in a nearby neighborhood of Turgeau hours after the initial attack. Some witnesses said that cops murdered the group before residents set fire to them.
