Five West Philadelphia students at Crossroads Accelerated Academy went to the hospital Wednesday after drinking grape juice that had drugs in it.
The concoction was brought in by two students, who then shared it with 10 other students. Crossroads Accelerated Academy serves overage seventh- and eighth-graders.
The kids were ages 12 to 16, according to WTXF-TV, a Philadelphia Fox affiliate.
The drug was identified by school officials as wonk, an opioid.
The drugged pupils soon began suffering headaches and vomiting. The academy was temporarily put on lockdown around 12:15 p.m. as law enforcement investigated the scene.
School district officials have asked parents to search their children’s rooms and belongings to try and root out drugs. Wednesday’s incident was the first time the district has had student hospitalizations due to contraband drugs being shared.
While updates on the children’s health were not provided due to their age, they are expected to recover.
The Philadelphia Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
